In 1996 Susan Collins campaigned for the United States Senate in the state of Maine. She promised to serve just two terms. Her platform focused on women’s rights including the right to have an abortion. She spoke frequently of the importance of Planned Parenthood.
This November Collins is running for a fifth term. During Trump’s illegitimate presidency she surrendered her respect and dignity to a man who is a racist, and a sexist, and supported him while ignoring the people of her state.
In September and October of 2018 hearings were underway in the Senate to fill the seat vacated in the Supreme Court by Justice Anthony Kennedy. Trump’s nominee was Brett Kavanaugh.
Kavanaugh was a member of the right-wing extremist group known as the “Federalist Society.” The truth is that Kavanaugh’s credentials were controversial, but what should have prevented his confirmation involved allegations of sexual assault during his college years.
Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee charging Kavanaugh with sexual assault. The way she was harassed by Republican senators was reminiscent of 1991 when similar charges against Clarence Thomas were levied by Anita Hill.
As a devoted American who is honest and at the same time demanding that our government always do the right thing, I must admit that I was appalled in 1991 and in 2018. I watched most of both hearings, and I found the old, white men who attacked these two respected women mercilessly a disgusting group of used up and incompetent old fools who should never have been elected to the senate.
Only the best of the best should be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. These lifetime appointments must be reserved for impartial men and women who will perform their only function; guaranteeing that our nation’s laws and policies align with the Constitution. Thomas, Kavanaugh, Alito, and other past Justices do not fit this requirement or definition.
Susan Collins supported Kavanaugh, although his past is filled with adamant opposition to a woman’s right to a legal abortion. She has turned against her core group of supporters in support of the worst, fascist, illegitimate president in history.
We must elect individuals who support the people and obey their oaths of office to ‘preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution.’ Collins is not one of these.
