Let me begin with an undeniable fact: no man or woman can claim to be a “Christian,” and especially a “Christian leader,” if he or she is a racist. Any man or woman who has actually read the New Testament and the teachings of Jesus Christ understands His message completely.
Therefore, I am stating a fact, Jerry Falwell Jr., the President of Liberty University, is not a Christian and therefore unfit to head a “Christian” school.
Recently Falwell released a tweet considered extremely racist. This action resulted in black faculty members and student athletes leaving Liberty University, one of the largest Christian schools in America.
“I was adamantly opposed to the mandate from @GovernorVA requiring citizens to wear face masks until I decided to design my own. If I am ordered to wear a mask, I will reluctantly comply, but only if this picture of Governor Blackface himself is on it!” Falwell said in the since-deleted tweet.
After taking down the tweet, Falwell attempted to back peddle his insensitive action.
“After listening to African American LU leaders and alumni over the past week and hearing their concerns, I understand that by tweeting an image to remind all of the governor’s racist past,” Falwell, a staunch supporter of President Trump, tweeted.
“I actually refreshed the trauma that image had caused and offended some by using the image to make a political point. Based on our long relationships, they uniformly understood this was not my intent, but because it was the result,” he added.
Several of the University staff and student athletes did not believe Falwell and left the campus.
The protests happening today are different than any in the past. They will not end until local, state, and federal governments take effective action to cease racial attacks against black Americans. The Civil War ended 155 years ago. The Civil Rights Act was signed 56 years ago. The changes expected after these events have not happened. As long as white supremacist organizations exist; as long as their leader remains in the White House; America will never become a great nation.
Racism is a synonym for ignorance. I have always hoped that our people are better than that. We will find out soon.
