Lisa Murkowski Struggling with “Doing the Right Thing”

Murkowski (2)

Trump is not THE problem with America. Although his fascist agenda has enhanced the serious issues facing our nation, all Republicans are complicit in the destruction of democracy in America. As long as they allow Constitutional violations by Trump and his circle of sinners, they must be condemned equally.

The truth is that Republicans are scared to death. Since November 9, 2016, right-wing politicians have been bowing to Trump’s anti-American policies for a single reason. They are desperate to win reelection, and need the votes of Trump’s cult if they have any chance of keeping their seats in the House and Senate. As Trump’s disapproval rating grows based on his failure to lead America in its fight against Covid-19, and with the base cause for the protests after the murder of George Floyd, it is apparent that voters are either switching sides or simply will not go to the polls in November.

For decades Republicans have lied to their base, and ignored the fact that their base was diminishing. They have ignored younger voters, women, minorities, and the working class. My demographic of ‘baby boomer’ is dying. I will be 74 next month and an original baby boomer born in 1946, shortly after the end of WWII. Voters who were conned by Trump in 2016 are suffering from his policies and are unlikely to vote for him again. The three states which gave Trump the Electoral College, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin are leaning left today.

The key is voter turnout. If a record turnout occurs, Republicans have no chance of holding onto the presidency or the senate.

Lisa Murkowski, Republican Senator from Alaska, has occasionally defied the orders of Moscow Mitch McConnell to support Trump regardless of their own opinions. Today she denounced Trump’s actions as he walked to St. John’s Church on Monday evening, breaking ranks with her fellow GOP senators. She is actually considering keeping her oath of office and doing the right thing.

“When I saw General Mattis’ comments yesterday I felt like perhaps we are getting to a point where we can be more honest with the concerns that we might hold internally and have the courage of our own convictions to speak up,” Murkowksi said on Capitol Hill.

In case you did not read the statement made by Trump’s former Secretary of Defense, he vehemently attacked Trump’s abuse of power, his use of military force to violate the first amendment rights of peaceful protesters, and the fact that he was destroying democracy in America.

“I was really thankful. I thought General Mattis’ words were true, and honest and necessary and overdue,” Murkowski said. “And, I have been struggling for the right words, and I was encouraged a couple of nights ago when I was able to read what President Bush had written. And I found that to be empowering for me as one leader.”

She was asked if Trump would have her support in November.

“I am struggling with it. I have struggled with it for a long time I think you know that. I didn’t support the President in the initial election, and I work hard to try to make sure that I’m able to represent my state well that I’m able to work with any administration and any president,” Murkowski said. “He is our duly elected President I will continue to work with him. I will continue to work with this administration but I think right now as we are all struggling to find ways to express the words that need to be expressed appropriately, questions about who I’m going to vote for not going to vote for I think are distracting at the moment.”

Solving the serious issues facing America is far simpler than politicians would like you to believe. If every member of congress followed the “golden rule,” America’s ills could be cured. Every American, regardless of who they are or what demographic they fit into, must “do the right thing” for their country.

There is no room for hypocrisy and cowardice in 2020. This is our only chance to save America from a fascist, illegitimate president, and his anti-American party. Vote!!!
