I report political events in our nation every day, and most of the time I hate it. There were times in my life I felt inspired by our nation’s leaders, including the most recent presidency of Barack Obama. However, far too often our nation’s president, and the leaders of congress were an embarrassment and a disappointment to informed Americans.
Beginning with my first interest in politics in 1956 I found worthy men and women on both sides of the aisle. However, the last two Republican administrations have been the worst in my lifetime.
What I never witnessed before was what happened during the Super Bowl on February 2, 2020.
More than 100 million people around the world were spending three to four hours watching an event which would replace the dark side of news events and political failures in America and throughout the rest of developed nations. No one, not even an angry old man like myself, wanted to think about the extreme ugliness which is America’s current situation in Washington. I wanted to cheer for my team while hoping for an exciting and competitive game.
When two purely political ads from Trump, and one from Michael Bloomberg interrupted the days events, I was not upset, I was angry and disgusted. If I were a supporter of either of these old, white men, I would renounce my support.
Even right-wing extremist Ann Coulter denounced President Donald Trump’s Super Bowl ad — which touted the commuted sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, who was ordered to spend life in prison for her role in a cocaine trafficking organization — for advocating for “releasing criminals.”
“FANTASTIC! I’d forgotten that @realDonaldTrump is releasing criminals! Promises made. Promises kept. #SuperBowl #TrumpAd,” Coulter tweeted on Sunday night.
Trump and the Trump Party have proven that they are the pro-crime party. Trump and the Trump Party are above the law; or at least they believe they are. Trump worships murderers and men who violate human rights including Vladimir Putin and Mohammad bin Salman. According to Trump, one of his best friends is the greatest villain in modern times, Kim Jong-un.
“Thanks to President Trump, people like Alice are getting a second chance,” Trump’s 30-second commercial said. “Politicians talk about criminal justice reform. President Trump got it done. Thousands of families are being reunited.”
Trump spent millions of dollars on two ads. The second made a fallacious claim that America is “stronger, safer and more prosperous than ever before.” None of this is true; Trump has weakened our military and made them more vulnerable around the world. Our country has never been in more danger from foreign attacks and possible war than at any other time in my life. Prosperity is only a reality for the super-rich and large corporations.
The bottom line is that the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA Championship and many other events are not venues where political ads should interrupt the celebration of competition and enjoyment.
Trump and Bloomberg should be ostracized for; let me put this bluntly; being a**holes.
Old, white men have no place in America’s government. Our nation’s average age is 38.1 years of age. Any man over the age of 60, and more importantly over the age of 70, should be rejected by the American people. They have no idea what is happening in our nation today.
