End a Dysfunctional Government and Insure Fair Elections? Two Changes; Term Limits for Congress and Abolish the Electoral College

Let me begin with why term limits for congress are mandatory. I only need to offer three names; three Republicans who are not only out of touch with a country which averages 38.1 years of age, they are more concerned about their party than their country. Moscow Mitch McConnell will be 78 in about three weeks. Chuck Grassley will be 87 on election day. Lamar Alexander will be 80.

Moscow Mitch will seek a 7th term in November. Grassley is in his 6th term. Alexander will complete a third term in the senate in 2021.

I am 73 years of age and too old to serve in Washington. I am well-informed about politics, and the good and bad about our nation’s government, but I am mostly out of touch with our young nation. Their needs and wishes are different from my own for the most part.

The three senators I singled out are far too old and far too uninformed about the needs and wishes of the average American; they should not be in a political office which affects all Americans. They are politicians and Republicans first. They believe they are better and smarter than the average American and therefore make decisions which are frequently in opposition to the majority.

For example; Lamar Alexander was one of the few Republican senators who was expected to vote in favor of allowing witnesses at Trump’s trial. There is no trial without testimony. This is another Republican farce. Today he ‘changed his mind;’ virtually guaranteeing Trump’s acquittal. Alexander gave a reason which is ludicrous and proves he is a tool of Moscow Mitch and does not serve the American people.

“I don’t need to hear any more evidence to decide that the president did what he’s charged with doing,” Alexander told NPR’s Steve Inskeep on Friday. “So if you’ve got eight witnesses saying that you left the scene of an accident, you don’t need nine.” What? Makes no sense at all.

It is clear that he made up his mind before the trial began.

“I agree he did something inappropriate, but I don’t agree he did anything akin to treason, bribery, high crimes and misdemeanors. I think there’s a big gap there,” Alexander told NPR.

I would like to educate the ancient and unqualified senator. The key to Trump being removed from office is ‘did he violate his oath of office; did he violate the Constitution?’ The truth is; many times. He obstructed justice about two dozen times. He attempted to bribe the leader of a foreign nation to aid his reelection. He has violated the Emoluments Clause time and time again.

The sad truth is that Trump will be illegitimately acquitted and beginning on that day the law means nothing to Republicans. The Constitution will become nothing more than a piece of old parchment. Our nation’s democracy will be diminished, and the people will never be represented in Washington as long as a single branch of our government is controlled by Republicans. The America of our founding fathers no longer exists.

The reason for abolishing the Electoral College is simple and contains a single fact. The people should elect the president. This is not a states issue. It is not even a political issue. This is a first amendment issue; every vote should count. The Electoral College negates the votes of millions of Americans every four years.

My state of Nevada is a perfect example of why the current situation is unconstitutional.

In 2000 I voted for Al Gore. Bush received a few more votes in our state and all of Nevada’s electoral votes went to the man who became the second worst president in history. My vote did not count. In 2016 I voted for Hillary Clinton. She received Nevada’s electoral votes. My neighbor voted for the worst president in history and his vote did not count.

A final fact and the only reason why Republicans are desperate to keep the Electoral College.

If this law did not exist, a Democrat would be in the White House today and would have been since 1993. Bill Clinton won the popular vote in 1992 and 1996. Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000. Bush 43 won the popular vote in 2004 but would not have been up for reelection after losing in 2000. Barrack Obama won the popular vote in 2008 and 2012. Finally, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 2016.

Sorry Republicans; those are the facts.
