Republicans have altered the meaning of many words. They distort the truth for their own benefit and attempt to mislead the American people. For instance, the term ‘liberal.’ I am a proud liberal because I support the Constitution and the rights it guarantees all Americans, not just the white one-percent.
The right-wing’s attacks on one word is the most upsetting; ‘feminist.’ Republicans claim that ‘feminism’ is an effort by some women to dominate men. Another Republican lie. I am proud to be a feminist and have been since I was a teenager. Feminism means equal rights for women; period.
For decades Republicans have displayed the fact that they believe women are second-class citizens. Women are not equal in the workplace and second in respect. Men have decided that they should be allowed to make decisions about women’s health. The right wing believes two things; whites are superior to minorities and men are superior to women.
Need proof? Congress left for their Christmas vacation without extending the Violence Against Women Act. Sexual assault and domestic violence continue to be a growing problem in America. The right-wing refuses to admit that they exist.
The senate hearings to confirm or reject Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court were a travesty. Justice was denied. Professor Christine Blasey Ford and others accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault during their college years. Republican senators attacked the credible woman and literally said “men tell the truth and women always lie.”
Friday the Republican failed presidential candidate and Governor of Ohio, John Kasich, escalated his state’s war on women. He signed legislation forbidding second trimester abortions. The fact is that because of other laws, the second trimester is the first time many women can legally obtain an abortion.
Old white men on the right will soon be out of Washington. They will be voted out of office by two demographics, and by a few old, white men such as myself who are proud to be feminists. Millennials are the largest voting bloc in America. For the first time in history they went to the polls in large numbers for the midterm election. Women compose 51 percent of our nation’s population. November 6th was called a “blue wave;” incorrect; it was a “pink wave.” Women led the fight which defeated dozens of right-wing politicians. On January 3, 2019 nearly 100 women will be sworn into congress; a record.
Women will no longer fight for their Constitutional rights; they are going to take them. In a relatively short number of years our government will be composed of far young men and many more women who will represent a population which averages only 37.8 years of age.
Younger Americans are generally less homophobic, refuse to see color, believe in full equality for both men and women, and are less likely to join a major religion.
Like it or not, America is changing. Although I may not live long enough to see a nation renewed which will move forward into the 21st century and join the rest of the developed nations, I and pleased and even proud to know that it will happen.
Plan to vote in 2020; this is our country, not theirs.
