Everyone is talking about the upcoming meeting between Trump and Vladimir Putin on Friday. Let’s end the discussion right now; it will be a reuniting of two men who have a closer connection than the media wants to tell you. What the media is not talking about is that this will occur at the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany.
This is a gathering of leaders from the largest economies in the world, and Trump has already alienated several of these men and women.
This will be Trump’s second trip overseas. During his first trip he made a fool of himself and harmed America’s relations with several of our allies. The result was the end of America’s claim to be the ‘leader of the free world.’ German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is the leader of the European Union, clearly stated that Europe can no longer look to the United States for leadership; they must rely on each other.
The G20 Summit will be crucial to America’s future in the world. Will Trump continue to isolate the United States from the rest of the free world, or will he ‘mend fences?’
Among the issues which will be discussed at the Summit is climate change. Trump refused to sign the Paris Accord; a non-binding agreement to reduce carbon emissions. The nations of Europe all agree that this is a serious problem and the greatest danger to the world; not Trump. By refusing to sign the agreement, he placed America in a position with only two other nations; Syria and Nicaragua.
In a speech last week, Merkel spoke to Trump’s worldview without directly naming him. She said, “We cannot wait until every last person on Earth has been convinced of the scientific proof.”
Trump also continues to denounce free trade agreements. NAFTA has been a constant target, and Trump withdrew support and halted negotiations for the TPP. Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that his country would “remain committed to promoting free trade and investment through opening up and say no to protectionism.”
Another fear is that Trump will places tariffs on steel from other nations; Canada, Mexico, Brazil the EU, Japan, and China. This could create a trade war where the United States would stand alone against the world.
Two other issues faced by the developed nations of the world are NATO and Trump’s ban of Muslims entering the United States.
Trump refused to offer his support for article five of the NATO agreement which states that if one nation is attacked, all nations are under attack. This is the core of the NATO alliance.
Great Britain’s Prime Minister, Theresa May, has labeled Trump’s Muslim ban as “divisive and wrong.”
Other concerns of the G20 are Trump’s ‘wall,’ and the fear of a military conflict between the United States and North Korea.
To be entirely truthful, I am very concerned about this Summit. Trump is a bully; he is not a diplomat. His penchant for tweeting is the result of a weak temperament which forces him to take rash and destructive action. Will his ‘America First’ policy cause a larger rift between our nation and our closest allies?
Trump’s ignorance is a choice. He refuses to be educated and learn how to be America’s president. The media has treated this Summit casually, but the truth is that it could become a catastrophe.
Please re-post; thank you.
