There is no doubt in my mind that if I lived in Texas, and wrote the things I write, I would be behind bars. Alabama continues to hold the title, but Texas is the second most racist state in America. If you are not a white supremacist, Christian, homophobe, or a woman who allows the men in her life to dominate her, there is no reason to live in the Lone Star state.
Texas Governor, Greg Abbott says that he will sign SB 4; a law that would let police ask drivers whether they’re in the U.S. legally, restrict what school bathrooms transgender students can use, ban most second-trimester abortions and let adoption agencies reject gay couples over religious objections.
All of these measures are unconstitutional, but that doesn’t stop Republicans in the state’s legislature from passing un-American laws.
Today was the last day of the Texas State Legislature. Hundreds of protesters arrived, and when Republican Matt Rinaldi noticed the fact that many of them were Hispanic, and an exchange between himself and a few Democratic lawmakers became heated, He made a phone call to ICE asking them to disperse the protesters.
“He came up to us and said, ‘I’m glad I just called ICE to have all these people deported,’” state Rep. Cesar Blanco (D-El Paso) told the Texas Tribune.
Rep. Ramon Romero Jr. (D-Fort Worth) said Rinaldi “gave the perfect example of why there’s a problem with SB 4,” which Gov. Greg Abbott has signed into law. The law says cities and counties must cooperate with federal immigration authorities that request law enforcement agencies detain people suspected of being undocumented.
“Matt Rinaldi looked into the gallery and saw Hispanic people and automatically assumed they were undocumented. He racial profiled every single person that was in the gallery today. He created the scenario that so many of us fear,” Romero added.
This is typically Texas, and Texas is not an American state. It belongs in our worst nightmares, not in 21st century America. It offers nothing to our nation other than oil and beef, and both are bad for us. I almost forgot; under George W. Bush, and Rick Perry, it executed more death row inmates than any state in the union. Now that’s something to be proud of!
Texas was the first to enact laws aimed at restricting minority voters; Texas was the first to force the shutdown of legal abortion clinics in low-income areas. These are Texas’ only ‘achievements.’
We don’t need them.
