Betsy DeVos was booed when she spoke at the commencement ceremony at Bethune-Cookman University. Then the graduates stood, and turned their backs to the dais. The University is a historical black college located in Daytona Beach, Florida. A member of DeVos staff is a white woman who has claimed discrimination for being white, and who also worked for an avowed white supremacist in the past.
Senator John Cornyn was scheduled to speak at Texas Southern University in his home state of Texas tomorrow. Today he was ‘uninvited’ at the request of the student body.
I know more about the other Texas Senator, Ted Cruz, than I do about Mr. Cornyn, and none of it is good. However, he is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, and there is no question about Trump’s support of white nationalism. And there is the fact that he’s a white man from Texas, the second most racist state in the nation; Alabama owns the title of number one.
“We asked Senator Cornyn to instead visit with our students again at a future date in order to keep the focus on graduates and their families,” the school said in a statement. “We, along with Senator Cornyn, agree that the primary focus of commencement should be a celebration of academic achievement.”
Two Democratic Representatives will address the graduates; Al Green, and Sheila Jackson Lee.
The history of black colleges in America began have a history like no other institutions of learning in the world. They originated because of segregation. Today they are a source of pride; pride for the achievements of their thousands of African American graduates.
With the current administration in Washington, racism is a growing problem in our nation. Anyone who is associated with Trump, or is a member of his circle of sinners, is unwelcome in the black community. Choosing to include Steve Bannon as his chief strategist, and Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General, was a slap in the face to all African Americans. Sessions is already proving his white supremacist beliefs. He is asking for more severe punishments for the same crimes President Obama declared less serious, and deserved leniency. Sessions’ goal is to incarcerate more African Americans for lengthier periods of time.
In my America, there is no place for white supremacy. Prejudice is ignorant. I can forgive many things, and I have, but I cannot forgive men and women who are ignorant by choice. And I will never stand for bigots who denounce the Constitution, and continue to claim that they are patriots.
White terrorism is on the rise. Hate crimes are too numerous to mention on the daily news. These despicable human beings have come out of the shadows to heed Trump’s call for hatred and violence. The KKK, the Aryan Brotherhood, and other hate groups are flourishing because they have support from the White House.
Only one thing will halt this increase in racism and bigotry; remove Trump and his circle of sinners from their control of our nation’s government.
