Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry maintained and advanced American policies around the world with both our allies and our adversaries. Clinton and Kerry had diplomatic skills beyond compare, and for the first time since the Jimmy Carter administration America did not enter into a new war in eight years of the Barrack Obama presidency. All four were tough when needed, and knew that listening was as important as speech. We need them back today.
Every choice Trump made for his advisory staff, and his cabinet was controversial if not criminal, with the exception of Nikki Haley as Ambassador to the United Nations. One of those poor choices is Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State. He has absolutely no resemblance the the aforementioned men and women who served under George Bush and Barrack Obama.
Tillerson was formerly the CEO of Exxon/Mobile. His only true foreign contact around the world is Vladimir Putin. They have established a close personal and business relationship over years of negotiations producing enormous revenue from Arctic oil fields. This is the only possible reason why Trump chose this man who has zero governmental experience.
Naturally, I opposed Tillerson’s nomination, as did Senators Warren and Gillibrand, and most Democrats. Republican from Arizona, John McCain voted in favor of Putin’s asset, but is having ‘buyer’s remorse.’
His greatest complaint is Trump’s praise of the world’s dictators and tyrants, including Putin, Duterte, Ergodan, and he had the audacity to say that he “would be honored” to meet with Kim Jong-un. Tillerson spoke to the State Department and defended his boss’s viewpoint. Now that it’s too late, McCain spoke out.
“With those words, Secretary Tillerson sent a message to oppressed people everywhere: Don’t look to the United States for hope. Our values make us sympathetic to your plight, and, when it’s convenient, we might officially express that sympathy,” McCain (R-Ariz.), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, wrote. “But we make policy to serve our interests, which are not related to our values. So, if you happen to be in the way of our forging relationships with your oppressors that could serve our security and economic interests, good luck to you. You’re on your own.”
Yesterday it was apparent that French voters saw what was happening in our nation since January 20th, and elected a moderate, Emmanuel Macron. The woman that Frenchmen called the “female Donald Trump,” Marine Le Pen was soundly defeated. Among her other ambitions, she would cease not only Muslim immigration, but all immigration to France. She also proposed that France follow England and exit the European Union. Both Trump and Putin endorsed Le Pen. French voters were obviously better informed and doubted the ability of Le Pen to solve their nation’s problems.
Between Trump and Tillerson, the State Department has virtually become null and void.
I fear that in four years Trump will place our nation in multiple wars, if not the ‘final war.’ He and Tillerson lack all diplomatic ability. They have big mouths, but small brains.
