For decades a discussion has been underway about whether or not religious institutions should pay taxes. I believe that any clear thinking American who believes in the Constitution will immediately say ‘yes.’ Christian religions receive billions of dollars from donors each year, and that money is not entirely spent on their parishioners. Televangelists make millions of dollars and claim an exemption. They purchase mansions, fly on private jets costing tens of millions of dollars, and lie to the desperate people who send them money to support their lavish lifestyles.
Trump signed another one of his now infamous executive orders this week. This one allows religions to command their parishioners to vote for certain political candidates. It also allows religious practitioners to deny services to the LGBTQ community based on their hypocritical and fallacious ‘beliefs.’
Let’s stop and tell the truth. Trump signed this piece of garbage to give the Christian religious right additional power over our government. He has once again violated the first amendment. Would you like me to remind you of its declaration that no single religion is allowed to control the future or our nation? Once more, here it is; and the meaning is entirely clear.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Christopher Hitchens famously said that “religion poisons everything.” While a thorough search might turn up technical exceptions to this rule, one of the things religion certainly does poison is politics. Poison politics leads to toxic government.
When the Republican Party joined forces with the Christian Religious right, they removed participation from all other religions, and 65 million others such as myself who denounce all organized religion. This is a violation of the first amendment no matter how some may interpret the truth.
Trump is a traitor to the American people. He sought the presidency purely for his personal gain. He is the anti-Christ.
