The first amendment was considered as the most important promise to the American people by our founding fathers. In case you have not read it recently, I will remind you of its content.
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
This is a guarantee of American rights. Jeff Sessions, Trump’s controversial Attorney General, told the press that he and Trump were investigating the possibility of altering the first amendment. We do not have true Americans running our nation.
In my opinion, Republicans have been in violation of the first amendment for years. Allowing one religion to interfere in our political system is in direct opposition to the first words in the Bill of Rights. The Christian religious right is a lobby; and to garner support for their elections, Republicans have bowed to their wishes. Issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage would not be “hot button issues” if not for religious hypocrisy. These issues have divided America more than any others. Therefore, it is fair to say that Christianity has harmed our government and our nation.
Cults exist because human beings are insecure; they need someone’s instruction about how to live a spiritual life. For me, this shows a weakness in mankind. I don’t believe that I need to be told how to live my life. I was born with a conscience; a sense of right and wrong. Religions have no connection with my belief regarding a god figure. If I choose to believe in a deity or not is no one’s business but my own.
Men created religions; not a god. They seek power and economic remuneration as they instruct their followers about what we should all inherently understand.
My biggest problems with leaders of the Christian religion is the way they ignore the words of the New Testament. They lie to their followers about what Christ told his followers. They ignore the passages which would discredit them. For instance, Jesus Christ forbade interference with governmental institutions.
“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.”
Today Trump is expected to sign an executive order which will give Christian churches amnesty from taxation, although they have become political lobbies. It will also allow them to discriminate against the LGBTQ community. Once again, Christians ignore Jesus’ teaching: “Judge not lest ye be judged.”
Religions can do more harm than good. The most violent excerpts in history tell tales of Christians and Muslims waging wars which resulted in the murder of tens-of-thousands of men, women and children. If there is a god, he or she would disapprove of them promoting hatred and violence.
