One of wisest and most compassionate actions by President Barrack Obama was to commute or lesson prison sentences for drug offenders. 48.6 percent of inmates are imprisoned for drug offenses. 27.6 percent of this group are incarcerated relating to convictions involving marijuana. Although African Americans compose only 12.3 percent of our nation’s population, more than one-half of the prison population is black; most for drug-related offenses.
President Obama’s actions were intelligent, progressive, and displayed an understanding of America in the 21st century.
Enter Donald Trump and his circle of sinners. Even the most uninformed and unaware American must know that Trump’s selection of advisers and cabinet members are unqualified and fail to support American beliefs and principles. They are regressive, and will destroy advances accomplished by their predecessors over the last 60+ years.
It’s difficult to single out one of these ‘deplorables,’ but if I had to, it would be Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The senator from the most racist state in the union, Alabama, has a history his state is proud of. Although you will never hear it from the media, he is most certainly a white supremacist. I have no doubt that if you searched his closet you white find a clean, pressed white robe.
Sessions is an old, white man who obviously misses his past. He has plans to renew the failed ‘war on drugs.’ This ‘war’ is a thinly disguised attack on the African American population. His first effort is to repeal the reduced charges for non-violent drug use and drug possession. His goal is to increase the black population in our prisons.
“Our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs is bad,” Sessions said to law enforcement officials in a speech in Richmond last month. “It will destroy your life.”
I find it disgusting that racists are afraid to be truthful. They believe that black America is inferior to white America, but are afraid to state their beliefs openly; until now. They have a voice in Washington and a leader who supports their vile convictions.
The Republican Party has been racist for decades, but with Trump as the leader of the white nationalist movement, there is a reason minorities in America are living in greater fear. They can no longer claim to be the ‘party of Lincoln.’
Sessions has included Steven Cook into his staff. Cook is a former cop and prosecutor who believes that there is ‘nothing wrong with our justice system,’ although every expert in the nation disagrees, and every statistic proves him completely wrong.
“They are throwing decades of improved techniques and technologies out the window in favor of a failed approach,” said Kevin Ring, president of Families Against Mandatory Minimums (FAMM).
Cook’s only supporters are many of our nation’s prosecutors who benefit politically and economically from larger numbers of blacks and other minorities receiving longer sentences than whites who possess the financial ability to hire better lawyers who influence judges.
There is no question that black Americans receive harsher treatment from law enforcement and the courts. We know that these facts please racists such as Sessions and Cook.
Hypocritical Republicans, led by Mitch McConnell, confirmed Sessions although he was previously refused a federal judgeship over 30 years ago after it was revealed that he was a confirmed racist.
I believe that my label of Trump’s cronies as his ‘circle of sinners’ is apropos. Although Sessions may be the worst, DeVos, Mnuchin, Ross, Pruitt, Tillerson, and others are equally unqualified and will be a destructive force for the agencies they now lead.
I won’t even get started on Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Sean Spicer, Jared Kushner, and Ivanka Trump; that’s for another time.
