Republicans talk a lot, but their actions define who and what they really are. They deny that the party has waged a ‘war on women’ for decades. Like their party’s leader, Donald Trump, they believe that women are sexual objects, and therefore second-class citizens. They refuse to support their demands for equal pay in the workplace. In support of the hypocritical Christian religious right, they deny a woman’s right concerning the health and welfare of her own body. Although the fast food industry and others who pay minimum wage are dominated by single mothers, Republicans refuse to allow an increase in the federal minimum wage.
Last Wednesday, Utah Republican James Green had a letter published in the ‘Park Record and the Wasatch Wave.’ Green’s overall premise for rejecting equal pay for women was that ‘men are the breadwinners, and women should remain in the home raising the children.’
“If businesses are forced to pay women the same as male earnings, that means they will have to reduce the pay for the men they employ, simple economics,” Green wrote. “If that happens, then men will have an even more difficult time earning enough to support their families, which will mean more Mothers will be forced to leave the home (where they may prefer to be) to join the workforce to make up the difference.”
And having more women in the workforce would create competition for jobs, “even men’s jobs,” Green wrote. That will, in turn, lower the pay for all jobs and force “more and more Mothers” into the workforce, he argued.
Green was forced to write an apology two days later, and also resigned from his position as Chairman of the Wasatch County Republican Party.
Don’t let anyone tell you that this is an isolated incident, and one man’s belief. This has been the attitude demonstrated by the entire Republican Party for years. A large part of the reason this is prevalent, is based on the fact that the vast majority of GOP politicians are old, white men, whose beliefs are antiquated.
In both the 2018, and 2020 elections, candidates the voters select must be more diverse. They must represent the majority and not the minority. Millennials are now the largest voting bloc in America. The fastest growing bloc is single women.
The results of the next two elections must represent America. Women, minorities, homosexuals, and non-Christians must be vetted for their qualifications alone. Hopefully many of those elected will be 45 years of age or younger.
Donald Trump has proven that dirty old white men do not make good representatives in Washington. Like Trump, they are backwards thinking, and have no understanding about where America must be in the next 10 or 20 years. The American people must never again elect a bully; a man whose ego is so fragile that he becomes defensive towards the smallest criticisms.
It’s not only time for change; it’s time for a BIG change.
