On March 23, 2010, President Barrack Obama signed into law the Affordable Care Act. This was not a perfect law, and everyone knew it from day one; it would need revisions after it was actually operating. Republican opposition weakened it from day one, but it was a beginning. The people of the United States were no longer the only citizens in the developed world without some form of healthcare for everyone.
Since that day in 2010, Republicans have attempted to repeal what is now commonly referred to as “Obamacare” more than 60 times. They became the epitome of Einstein’s definition of insanity; “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Now that some Americans have a new and illegitimate president in Donald Trump, who promised to repeal and replace the ACA, Republicans may finally accomplish their unpopular and dangerous goal.
Although opposition to the ACA is leading in the polls, it is ahead by a very small margin, approximately three percent, the popularity of the law has greatly increased since its inception. 2016 witnessed the largest enrollment since its beginning, and today more than 20 million Americans have life-saving healthcare they could not afford or receive nearly seven years ago.
Trump and his Republican hypocrites claim that they have a plan to repeal and replace the ACA, but have not offered a single idea to the American people. If the party of the rich accomplish their goal, without replacing it, they will be guilty of murdering thousands of American citizens each year.
During a town meeting last week, House Speaker Paul Ryan was confronted by a Republican supporter who volunteered for Reagan and Bush 41. A few years ago, the gentleman discovered that he had cancer which was fortunately curable. He offered to sell his business to pay for treatment, but the hospital required insurance. He was previously opposed to the ACA, but was now forced to accept it. He thanked President profusely for the ACA, much to the dismay of Ryan. The gentleman said that without the insurance, he would not be standing in the town hall meeting that evening. Ryan had nothing positive to say and did not directly respond.
There are thousands of similar situations across our nation. Those with pre-existing conditions will not be able to have healthcare which would be affordable. Thousands of Americans will lose their lives as Republican politicians offer another tax break for the one-percent.
All Republicans have an intelligence level which is ten cents short of a dollar. They continue to believe that they are fooling the majority of Americans who know that they are the party of special interests, and have no concern for 320 million Americans who cannot afford four homes which cost 40 million dollars each, or bottles of wine with dinner each night which are priced at 800 or 900 dollars each.
If you vote Republican, you are voting against yourself, your family, and those you love. Wise up; it’s your America; take it back and refuse to shout “Heil Trump.”
