Electing a white supremacist; a man who promotes hatred; has created repercussions before his inauguration. America has not been this divided since the Civil War. On one side we have white, Christian men and women and on the other, everyone else. Hate crimes have become commonplace. Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, the LGBT community, and women are living in an increased state of fear. The worst of America; those who were hiding in the shadows; are now openly expressing their sordid view of America.
Take the owner of a convenience store in Mayhill, New Mexico. In his front window are signs supporting the extremist views of the right wing; and nothing is off limits. His signs post slogans directed at blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, some celebrities, and especially hate-filled remarks about President Obama.
“Obama & other Muslims not welcome here,” is an example of his despicable signage. What may be more upsetting, is that they are for sale, and others who agree with him purchase them.
There is a larger question here; is this evil man violating the first amendment, or is he taking his rights to the limit?
This man’s hero, Donald Trump, hates free speech, and seeks the destruction of first amendment rights, but would he denounce this man’s extremist beliefs and remove his right to post them in his store? I sincerely doubt it.
Is this an attempt to promote violence against all non-whites; all those who practice a religion other than Christianity? If this is so, aren’t his actions similar to yelling “fire” in a movie theater?
If you read the comments posted regarding this story, most are focused on the discriminatory statements on the front door. The vile man who owns the establishment refuses service to anyone who does not agree with his twisted views of Donald Trump’s America.
The largest number of signs direct attention to the Muslim community, in response to the hate-filled speech from Trump during his rallies.
A Muslim rights group, the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), responded to the New Mexico store.
“While everyone has the First Amendment right to free speech – even offensive speech – we urge the store’s owner to remove the sign in the interest of common decency and of our nation’s unity at a time of increasing divisions,”the council’s communications director Ibrahim Hooper said in a statement.
I want everyone to focus on one fact; when Trump and his supporters denigrate non-whites, they display their hatred with the use of words expressing that extreme hatred. They are ignorant and immature. Mr. Hooper used his mastery of the English language, refused to attack the store’s owner. He is attempting to create understanding and to promote tolerance. This is American; those who hate, hate America.
The Trump Effect continues to stain our nation and our flag. We must be fearful of those who appear to promote a different form of ‘patriotism,’ with the use of slogans such as “make America great again.” These are simply thinly disguised words promoting white supremacy; a return to our nation’s dark past.
We, who believe in a principled America, must not hate this misguided and ignorant man; we must pity him for the ugliness he keeps inside. His very soul is filled with misery; all joy for life is non-existent.
